چکیده

Observational evidence for inflowing motions in massive star forming regions has been extremely rare. We have made a spectroscopic survey of a sample of 28 massive star forming cores associated with water masers. An optically thick line of HCN 3−2 was used in combination with optically thin lines (HCN 3−2 or CS 5−4, 3−2, and 2−1 ), to identify “blue” line profiles that can indicate inflow. Comparing intensities for 18 double-peaked line profiles yields 11 blue and 3 red profiles that are statistically significant. In the full sample of 28 sources, 12 show blue profiles and 6 show red profiles that are statistically significant based on the velocity offsets of lines that are optically thick from those that are optically thin. These results indicate that HCN 3 − 2 emission may trace inflow in regions forming high-mass stars. Subject headings: stars: formation — ISM: molecules

Proper Motions of Oh Masers and Magnetic Fields in Massive Star-forming Regions

We present data of proper motions of OH masers in the massive star-forming regions ON 1, K3-50, and W51 Main/South. OH maser motions in ON 1 are consistent with expansion at approximately 5 km s−1, likely tracing the expanding ultracompact H II region. Motions in K3-50 are faster and may be indicating the final stages of OH maser emission in the source, before the OH masers turn off as the H II...

Formation and pre–MS evolution of massive stars with growing accretion

We briefly describe the three existing scenarios for forming massive stars and emphasize that the arguments often used to reject the accretion scenario for massive stars are misleading. It is usually not accounted for the fact that the turbulent pressure associated to large turbulent velocities in clouds necessarily imply relatively high accretion rates for massive stars. We show the basic diff...

Signatures of inflow motion in cores of massive star formation: Potential collapse candidates

Using the IRAM 30 m telescope, a mapping survey in optically thick and thin lines was performed towards 46 high mass star-forming regions. The sample includes UC Hii precursors and UC Hii regions. Seventeen sources are found to show ”blue profiles”, the expected signature of collapsing cores. The excess of sources with blue over red profiles ([Nblue – Nred]/Ntotal) is 29% in the HCO + J=1–0 lin...

Large Magnetic Fields and Motions of Oh Masers in W75 N

We report on a second epoch of VLBA observations of the 1665 and 1667 MHz OH masers in the massive star-forming region W75 N. We find evidence to confirm the existence of very strong (∼ 40 mG) magnetic fields near source VLA 2. The masers near VLA 2 are dynamically distinct and include a very bright spot apparently moving at 50 km s−1 relative to those around VLA 1. This fast-moving spot may be...

Structure and Conditions in Massive Star Forming Giant Molecular Clouds

Massive stars form in clusters within self-gravitating molecular clouds. The size scale of these clusters is sufficiently large that nonthermal, or turbulent, motions of the gas must be taken into account when considering their formation. Millimeter wavelength radio observations of the gas and dust in these clouds reveal a complex, self-similar structure that reflects the turbulent nature of th...
